Mazatl is a contemporary artist whose relief prints, drawings, paintings, murals, and installations explore themes of unity, nature, introspection, healing, and liberation. He currently resides in Chiapas, Mexico.
“Murciélago Magueyero” is a limited edition hand-carved and hand-printed Linocut by Mazatl.
Inspired by photos from Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark portrait series, Mazatl created three linocuts. The first and second feature the jaguar (Panthera onca) and the Mexican wolf (Canis lupus baileyi), both of which are found along the U.S.-Mexico border. Mazatl explores the impact that physical boundaries have on the migration patterns and survival of these two particular species, as well as many others including humans. The third linocut incorporates a combination of several of Sartore’s images and spotlights the endangered Mexican long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris nivalis), another creature that crosses the border into Texas and New Mexico. The bat is a pollinator of agave plants, some of which are processed and turned into tequila.
This art series—a collaboration with the Campaign for Nature—highlights the goal of protecting at least 30 percent of the planet by 2030 and the recognition of our interdependence with all life on Earth. Because all life is interconnected, when we protect nature we are protecting ourselves! To prevent catastrophe, we have to rethink what conservation is, moving beyond blanket numbers. We can only achieve our goals with the guidance and leadership of local communities, and with full respect of their rights.
This project by Aaron Huey was made possible with a grant from Inside Nat Geoand created in collaboration with Amplifier Art for the WYSS Foundation.
