I like to think that I'm pretty open-minded about music, and definitely don't limit myself to just aggressive music. There's something to appreciate in just about every genre, and I play multiple styles of music, be it punk, hardcore, metal, post-rock, folk, noise, electronic music, etc. I was raised to appreciate art in all forms, and music is most definitely an art. However, sometimes we come across bands we just plain don't like the first time we hear them. One such example was Touche Amore. I saw them live, opening for Thursday. Ironically, what I didn't like was that I thought it was just bad Screamo, when I was there to see a band that has been labeled Screamo since their inception. I didn't like the vocals, I didn't like the guitar work, none of it. Admittedly, I went in with the idea that I wanted to hear stuff like Thursday. I tend to do that. Anyways, I recently gave them another try. I saw a post on Facebook, by Deathwish talking about them. I had my mind changed, when I actually gave them a chance. Very passionate sounding music. It reminds me of Rites Of Spring, to an extent. They've been labeled Screamo, Melodic Hardcore, Post-Hardcore, but I think it's really more than all that. They're playing music on their own terms. I really started thinking about this after that last Deathwish podcast. As funny as it is, there's some really good points brought up in there. What's a band that you couldn't get into at first? And why couldn't you? Also, check out that new podcast, funny as hell at times, but also very insightful.

Yeah, i read some "best metal/rock albums of all time"-list when I was 13 and Appetite for Destruction was no. 1, so i checked it out. I thought it sounded really dated and not heavy enough and the vocals annoyed me. But they grew on me over time, and now i like them.

A more recent one is Mental. I got Get an Oxygen Tank in some mystery package from Bridge Nine a year ago and thought it was ok, but didnt listen that much to it. I just started listening to it again last week and its growing on me.

I couldn't appreciate metallic hardcore until recently when I bought Dedicated to Babies Who Came First after hearing Time to Break Down on the Deathwish Inc website. The genre still isn't my favorite, but I now have an appreciation for it, my two favorites of that style being Cold World and 108. Thanks for that DW.

Another band I never got was Dinosaur Jr. All I heard from them a long time ago was their first LP on SST with a bad recording quality, I hated it and slept on this band for years until I heard their new LP Farm in 2009. Since then I'm fairly obsessed with this band and listen to them probably everyday.

Often really great albums take quite a few listens to get into them and then you love them and cant stop listening to them.

thought it was more "wave" bullshit until I read about the concept of their albums.
now they are one of my favorites. i guess a good idea behind the music means a lot to me.

A band that falls under this for me is definitely Disclose, but they're among my favorites now. Definitely not for everyone however.
