Since Deathwish sponsor and have sponsored a number of great Mixed Martial Artists, I figured it would be an interesting to have an "official" thread about the sport and our affiliated athletes.

Here are links to their pages on the Deathwish site:

Dan Lauzon: [www.deathwishinc.com]

Joe Lauzon: [www.deathwishinc.com]

Ryan Parker: [www.deathwishinc.com]

Rick Hawn: [www.deathwishinc.com]

Toby Grear: [www.deathwishinc.com]

Tyson Chartier: [www.deathwishinc.com]

Periodically, we will be posting news about these guys, as well as things we find interesting in the sport.
Feel free to contribute.

Thanks.

-J.

I was thinking about G-sots fight with Lauzon today. This thread reminded me of that, and it seems as though Lauzon has a really tough fight ahead, if he wants to make a solid run at it, he needs to bring better hands than the fight with Stout.

Joe vs. George:
Stout is a stud kickboxer and highly underestimated in my opinion. The best Stout that could of showed up fought Joe, but he is no George.
George is a fantastic, well rounded fighter, and altogether more dangerous than anyone Joe has fought in the UFC so far.
I feel it's going to be a positional grappling match more than anything.

They are both fantastic grapplers, and they both have great striking (George's being utilized more as of late).
Excited to see what happens for sure.

Your boy had a great looking throw, seems like the throw actually kind of rocked him and the punches were just a good follow up. He hasn't had many fights but from what I have seen he throws and dumps guys nicely. His guard passing could use some work it seems but he is impressive overall for sure.

Pulling hard for Cain. I also feel like I am the only one rooting for Shields tonight. This will be good.

I don't think he was working for a guard pass, but was rather content in throwing big shots from that position.
Quite a lot of people prefer to work like that, especially when they don't view the guard of their opponent as a threatening one.

UFC:
Cain walked through Brock as I thought he would.
Brock's wheels come off when he gets hit, and it was only a matter of time.

Shield's weight cut crushed him, and Kampmann tends to be underrated since his knee surgeries a few years back.
Before then he was considered a major player in their WW division, and still should be in my opinion.

Diego and Paulo's fight was fantastic.

Really it was just a small thing that seemed to stand out in general from his other fights and a few of his grappling competition videos. He is doing just fine, particularly when you consider how few fights he has had, I just feel like from some more dominant positions he could be get some deadly ground and pound in. Like I said he is impressive without a doubt, and I think he will do well in Bellator.

The weight cut really did kill Jake Shields, to beat someone that good is impressive. I suppose I am just more tolerant of grappling, but I thought that fight was entertaining, and if you want to talk about some great guard passing, Jake Shields is excellent. The way he takes mount and can generally hold it is very impressive, and it is something many wrestlers struggle with, and as you said will often look to work from guard or half guard. I have a feeling he will look alot better in his next fight.

Diego and Paulo had a great fight, I just hope Paulo doesn't end up getting cut. It seems like they are cutting guys pretty quickly these days.

Junior Dos Santos will be the heavyweight champion.

And agreed Paulo won't be cut for a while, especially after a battle like that. They both left it all on the mat, closing seconds were a testament to that.

Junior has the boxing skills to do some damage to Cain, but his lack of wrestling will be his downfall here.
Junior can/will get taken down and I see Cain winning by decision because of that.

I just don't see it making it to decision either way, none the less...anticipation is mounting.

Hi, I'm mostly a forum lurker. I like this thread alot because I got into mma about a year ago and I'm looking for all sorts of cool fights I missed in the last years. Obviously I've seen the big fights who were in the UFC, so now I'm looking for some other, not so well known, fighters in different leagues. I'm especially interested in grappling.

I read the posts about Jake Shields and I enjoyed the fight, although his weight cut affected him (like you guys talked about). He seemed to be a fighter with a big reputation, well, I never heard of him - I hope to get some hints on topics like that. (Everyone I know think mma is a bit weird, I'm European, so its a kind of unfulfilled hobby.)

So please name some of your favorite grapplers and their most interesting fights. Any contributions are much appreciated.

Thanks!
Ben

Ben -

Thanks for contributing.

Shields:
He is an established MMA fighter from the Cesar Gracie camp. He fought in Japan in Pancrase and Shooto in the early 2000's and made an impact there fighting some name opponents. His big breakout was fighting in the Rumble on the Rock (JD Penn's organization. BJ's brother) in Hawaii during the mid 2000's and was their 175 lb champion. Eventually he landed in Elite XC and was their Welterweight Champion, and eventually moved up to Middleweight and took the Strikeforce Middleweight belt. He never lost any of his belts, but relinquished them as he moved from organization to organization.

You wouldn't really know his name unless you followed the sport as a whole. Since Zuffa essentially dominates MMA news at this point, unless you were more of a "hardcore" fan as they say, you wouldn't really have gotten the chance to know him, or his history.

As for some interesting fights, here's a brief list:

Some recent fights to search out:
Cerrone vs. Razor Rob
Ben Henderson vs. Cerrone (1st fight)
Garcia vs. Jung
Cruz vs. Benavidez
Dan Henderson vs. Shields

Classics:
Fedor vs. Nog 3
Fedor vs. Randleman
Fedor vs. Crocop
Quinton vs. Wanderlei (both fights)
Frank Shamrock vs. Bas
Frank Shamrock vs. Tito
Diaz vs. Gomi
Gomi vs. Sakurai

Grappling (search Youtube):
Marcelo Garcia
Xande Ribeiro
Roberto Abreu
Robert Drysdale
Vinny Magalhaes
Demian Maia

Joe Lauzon Apparel in the DW Estore: [deathwishinc.com]

Mixed Martial Artist Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon is one of the most interesting athletes competing in the UFC today. Deathwish has had a long standing friendship with him, even being his main sponsor for his triumphant UFC 63 win over legend Jens Pulver. Since then, Joe's career and popularity has skyrocketed, making him one of the most well known faces of the sport worldwide.

Joe's next fight is this Saturday at UFC 123 against George Sotiropoulos.

Deathwish are proud to announce that our trusted DW Estore now exclusively carries apparel straight from Joe Lauzon himself. Currently we are offering his brand new UFC 123 T-Shirt, as well as his classic UFC 118 T-Shirt.

Joe's new UFC 123 T-Shirt proudly displays Joe's trademark logo printed in white and blue ink, while the back reads: UFC 123 Detroit, MI 11.20.10 "ACCORDING TO AUSTRALIAN FISH & GAME, 100 PEOPLE ARE KILLED EVERY YEAR BY ADULT JOEYS, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!". A hilarious dig at his Australian born opponent.

Joe's UFC 118 design has become legendary. Made for the historic Boston UFC event, this T-Shirt features the "JL" logo inside a shamrock shape, while the back reads: UFC 118 Boston, MA 8.28.10 "I love fighting like a fat kid loves cake". A homage to his opponent Gabe Ruediger's very public sweet tooth.

I'm actually quite excited for tomorrows card, George looks hungry but I think Lauzon is going to have the upperhand standing up, going to be an interesting fight
