Thats the beauty in music. We all pull different things from it, and in the case of "Never Better" I thought it had some things that the first two albums didn't have.

I think I'm ready to commit to this...

1. Saviours - Accelerated Living
2. Fell Voices - Untitled LP
3. Wolves In The Throne Room - Black Cascade
4. Mount Eerie - Winds Poem
5. Teitanblood - Seven Chalices
6. Eagle Twin - The Unkindness of Crows
7. Converge - Axe To Fall
8. Buried Inside - Spoils of Failure
9. The Holy Mountain / Black Tusk split 7"
10. Coalesce - Ox & the Ox EP
11. Disappearer - The Clearing
12. Om - God is Good

Honorable mention goes to...
1. Narrows - New Distances
2. Blacklisted - N.O.D.T.B.H.M.T.M.
3. Ben Nichols - Last Pale Light in The West
4. Cough - Sigillum Luciferi
5. Cable - The Failed Convict
6. Jesu - Infinity

Anyone who put the Mastodon record above Coalesce either lost their mind or their balls. That self-indulgent Nu-Prog shit can get lost. Crack the Skye might be the pinnacle of the bands musicianship, but it doesn't have a fraction of the spirit of Remission, that was a good record.

Well, the balls are still there. Mind? Who knows.

I obviously can't speak for anyone else here, but here's my rebuttal:

Firstly, if you've seen the little making of DVD that they put out for Crack the Skye, you'd know that "spirit" is definitely the last thing lacking from the record. It seems stylistically they were almost more honest on this record than ever before.

As for the placement - doing these top [insert number here] lists has proved more difficult every year just because of my own constant indecisiveness but yet it consistently proves to be a silly war I must wage. This time around I decided to put it in a more direct way - what album would I want to give up last? It helped a bit.

It took me a long time to get into Mastodon and perhaps that lack of emotional attachment to any previous record helped, but when it clicked...it really clicked. Strangely, though, that "click" has nothing to do with why I adore Crack the Skye.

Being a fairly big prog fan (Camel, not Dream Theater folks), the musical stream of conscience that makes up each section on this record is but a nostalgic gift for my ears - and the band is simply at their best in every respect. Whether three minutes or thirteen, each song builds upon the previous' remnants while exploring both relevant and compelling aural dimension. To top it off, it leaves me excited for the next record which is more than I can say for Blood Mountain.

Coalesce, on the other hand, just didn't captivate me on the same level. The band is as tight as ever, the songs are great, but I didn't find myself really surprised at any point...which, while it may sound dumb, is one of the only reasons I still love music as much as I do (same is true for Wolves in the Throne Room's Black Cascade, while I'm on the subject).

Nonetheless, I can see your side, man. Coalesce stayed very true to self and form and put together one hell of an album.

I still need to get that Mount Eerie record, though, I've heard great things.

Well, that was a more comprehensive rebuttal than I expected, hahaha.

I guess my problem with Mastodon records post-Remission is the same problem I have with Baroness post-First and Second. My problem is, the riffs, the structure and the fluidity are all exceptional but it feels like all that high minded execution comes and the expense of spontaneity, which for me, is critical in both metal and hardcore and which I found abundant in the WITTR and Coalesce records. I suppose the obvious problem is not with the band or the record but with my expectations of the band based on their previous output.

I just hoped for a good balance of thoughtful execution and just a plain ol' go-for-the-throat demon exorcism on tape and I didn't feel that was the case here. Whatever mood or meditation Mastodon was going for was lost on me, whereas Om's record for example, hit it's mark almost immediately. I should also note, 99% of the time when a band increases it's accessibility, I'm already biased against them. I'm silly and jaded.
